About
Song of the Morning is operated by Golden Lotus, Inc. a Michigan nonprofit corporation. Golden Lotus, Inc. was founded in 1970 by J. Oliver Black, a highly advanced disciple of the yoga master Paramahansa Yogananda.
Song of the Morning, a Yoga Retreat of Excellence, offers an opportunity to become immersed in the simplicity, serenity and sustenance of a balanced yogic lifestyle. We offer a place of spiritual refreshment and relaxation to those on a conscious spiritual journey toward union with the Divine, to those hoping to discover their own highest potential – and to all who seek respite from the worries and cares of the world. Whether you’re looking for a personal retreat or an opportunity to learn spiritual tools from our own daily practices and those offered in programs year-round, Song of the Morning awaits you.

Located on 800 acres of rolling countryside in Michigan’s northern woodlands, we offer an opportunity to experience oneness in nature. Come ski, snow-shoe, hike, or bike; watch for our American bald eagles, trumpeter swans, and other wildlife; or simply marvel at the majestic beauty of our pristine natural surroundings. Come for an evening, a weekend, a week, or longer.
Join us for evening meditations, daily hatha yoga, or our Sunday devotional meditation services. Sign up for a program, enjoy the solitude of your own personal retreat, or offer to serve. Enjoy delicious vegetarian meals prepared by our loving kitchen staff. We hope to see you soon!
Yoga is for Everyone!
Song of the Morning’s spiritual practices are based in Raja Yoga, the “royal” or complete path, which emphasizes balanced living and meditation. Included are various branches of yoga that lead to an ever deepening relationship with the Divine and with one’s Self:
• Hatha Yoga - yoga asanas or postures and breathing techniques.
• Bhakti Yoga - devotional practices, including prayer and devotional singing.
• Karma Yoga - selfless service.
• Jnana Yoga - the path of wisdom through reading scriptures, introspection and meditation.
Yoga offers something for every nature and disposition. Join us as we dive deep into the heart of yoga through our programs and daily practices, including hatha yoga, evening meditations with devotional chanting and prayer, and opportunities to serve. Take time to explore our bookstore and library for timeless treasures, including a complete collection of Paramahansa Yogananda’s writings and other spiritual works.
